Today’s agricultural industry faces significant challenges due to climate change, scarcity of natural resources and the growing demand for more organic and sustainable food and products. Grape growing is no exception. For this reason, at JULIÁN SOLER, preserving the best of Castilla La Mancha’s winemaking tradition, we have given way to new agricultural practices that preserve the environment and improve biodiversity, in addition to maximizing production. In this article we detail, step by step, how we do it, what innovative techniques we use and how we combine excellence and sustainability in a single product: our concentrated white and red grape juices.

Organic, sustainable… regenerative viticulture

At JULIÁN SOLER we are committed both to producing high quality and authentic concentrated must, with unique flavors and colors, and to caring for and minimizing the impact of production and cultivation on the environment. That is why we adopt agricultural practices that protect or improve soil health, reduce water consumption, incorporate healthy energy sources and promote overall ecological balance. These are practices that integrate principles of organic agriculture, sustainable agriculture and regenerative agriculture. Can all three approaches coexist? Of course, because there really is no single recipe for practicing agriculture in the service of life and the planet.

• As organic agriculture, our grapes are grown avoiding the use of synthetic chemicals. The health of the soil is essential, so we strive to keep it fertile, free of substances that alter its composition and structure.  
• As sustainable agriculture, we go a step further in protecting natural resources. In addition to soil health, our sustainable farming practices encompass multiple approaches, promote and prioritize efficient water and energy use, wildlife preservation, social responsibility, worker protection, local grower relations, etc. 
• As regenerative agriculture, we continue to deepen our sustainable practices. In addition to maintaining ecological balance, we also seek to improve agricultural ecosystems, restore them, regenerate them…. For example, through practices that regenerate the soil, that rebuild soil organic matter, that increase biodiversity that benefits both the environment and the vines.

At JULIÁN SOLER these three practices intertwine and complement each other in a natural way. In the end they all share the same goal: to grow high quality white and red grapes, while promoting a positive environmental impact.

Various agricultural practices applied in our vineyards:
Crop diversification or rotation to prevent soil erosion.	Over time, we alternate different plant species in the same agricultural plot, within a defined order and cycle. This avoids soil nutrient depletion and reduces the risk of disease spread.
Cover crop	We maintain a vegetative cover (such as certain leguminous plants) in certain agricultural areas. We choose plant species that do not increase water use and minimize competition with vines for soil nutrients. It is a crop designed to protect the soil, preventing erosion, conserving soil moisture and providing essential mineral nutrients. They even favor carbon sequestration and provide habitat for beneficial insects and arthropods that control harmful mites.
Use of organic compost	The compost, rich in macro and micro nutrients, previously analyzed, is applied in a controlled manner in specific quantities and periods. This compost is a complete fertilizer that promotes healthy vine growth and improves soil biodiversity.
Automated drip irrigation system	We have implemented an automated drip irrigation system for the precise distribution of water directly to the roots of the vines. This practice optimizes water consumption and reduces water waste. It also minimizes the risk of fungal diseases.
Irrigation with vegetable water: water from grapes for grapes	This is an innovative practice at JULIÁN SOLER. We collect and re-conduct the vegetable water that is generated in our plants during the processing of the grapes and the concentration of the juice, to reuse it in the irrigation of our crops. This water comes from the grapes themselves, so it contains important nutrients that improve soil fertility. This circular process contributes to the sustainability of production.
Preservation of wildlife and local ecosystems	Within our vineyards, we have adopted an approach of coexistence with wildlife, establishing reserve zones to encourage biodiversity. This not only improves ecosystem health, but also promotes pollination and biological pest control. For example, strips of native vegetation are established to allow for the safe movement of wildlife. Nest boxes have been installed along the vineyards for insectivorous birds, owls and bats. Wetlands and ponds are also preserved, where pest-fighting microorganisms and amphibians coexist.
Biological pest control	We take advantage of beneficial organisms and apply agroecological strategies to prevent and reduce insect and disease damage. As discussed in the previous point, we maintain a balanced ecosystem that supports the presence of natural predators and beneficial microorganisms and insects. In addition, we use biopesticides, based on essential oils and plant extracts.
Application of sensors and data analysis for performance improvement	We have integrated advanced sensors in our vineyards, which are integrated with data analysis systems to monitor key variables in real time. In this way, we optimize cultivation practices without wasting resources. For example, soil moisture sensors allow us to adjust irrigation according to the exact needs of the vines. While multispectral satellite imagery allows us to identify early on areas of the vineyard that may be experiencing growth problems or nutritional stress.

Working with local farmers

Another fundamental pillar of JULIÁN SOLER‘s sustainability strategy is its strong commitment to the farmers of Castilla-La Mancha. Through strategic alliances, we work hand in hand with local producers to help preserve the tradition of growing native grape varieties, and to ensure that agriculture is always developed under the organic, sustainable and regenerative approach. This partnership not only ensures that production is environmentally friendly, but also that it is economically viable and socially equitable for farmers.

Our collaboration model focuses on:

• Training farmers in sustainable practices. We have developed a comprehensive training program for local farmers, addressing key aspects such as organic fertilization, biological pest control, water efficiency and soil conservation and regeneration techniques.
• Incentives for the implementation of organic and regenerative farming practices. We support farmers in the adoption of organic practices, through free technical assistance or accompaniment, the establishment of preferential prices for harvests generated under certain sustainable cultivation practices or the ease of access to fertilizers or other products necessary in the management of an organic vineyard. 
• Combination of traditional knowledge in the cultivation with technological innovation. We strive to ensure that new generations continue with the legacy and tradition of La Mancha vine growing. Of course, using the necessary technology to adapt to new market demands and the challenges of climate change.
• Sustainable profitability for farmers. At JULIÁN SOLER we have more than 50 years of experience in the production and export of grape juice concentrate, a product that is produced in Castilla La Mancha and shipped to more than 60 countries around the world. Implementation of FSA audits

FSA (Farm Sustainability Assessment) audits are designed to evaluate and improve sustainability in farming practices. Implementing them in our company expresses our commitment to sustainability and continuous improvement of our farming operations.

These external audits evaluate aspects such as the efficient use of resources, soil and water conservation, and employee welfare. They represent a tool to identify areas for improvement and to demonstrate to our customers that we are always committed to transparency and care for the environment and the community.
